Roullete, French for “little wheel,” is the classic casino game with a simple ruleset and many betting options. It’s easy enough for a beginner to enjoy, yet offers a surprising depth of strategy for more serious players. If you’re considering making your way to the roulette table, read on for everything you need to know.
Before you start playing, it’s important to set a budget and choose the right roulette table for your bankroll. Each table carries a placard with a description of the minimum and maximum bets. Choose a table within your budget, and then decide what types of bets you want to make. Start with outside bets, which cover groups of numbers rather than individual digits, as these are generally cheaper and offer a higher chance of winning.
Once you’ve placed your bets, the croupier will spin the wheel and send a small white ball spinning around it until it lands in one of the slots. The ball will either land in a black or red number, an even or odd number, or on 0 or 00 (on American-style wheels). If you made a bet on the correct slot, you’ll win.
The Roulette Wheel
A standard roulette wheel is a solid, slightly convex disk with a series of 37 compartments, or pockets, painted alternately red and black. There are also two green compartments, called 0 and 00 on the American-style wheel. A croupier will spin the wheel and throw the ball into one of these compartments, which will mark a particular number on the table map if it wins.
The wheel is a little more complex than the table map, with a series of symmetries and patterns. For example, all of the low red and high black numbers are on the same side of the wheel, and the 0 is opposite these. A dozen bet is thus a good bet for those who don’t like to take risks.
Between each spin, you’ll need to give the dealer a certain amount of money by placing it on the table and asking for “colour.” The dealer will then assign your chips a value corresponding with the table’s minimum bet (usually $1 or $5). In addition to your colour chips, you will receive regular roulette chips that can be used to place bets during the rest of the game. These are marked with the table’s name and denomination, so they can be easily distinguished from your colour chips. You will also need to purchase a special marker that displays your player ID. You’ll use this to indicate your bets during the game and to cash out your winnings.
